For the 2018 model year, Buick has brought back the station wagon with the Regal TourX model. An all-new offering, the Regal TourX really wows with its beautiful design, surprisingly good price point, and strong drivability. Subsequently, I gave it an A- rating at iSeeCars.com and an A rating at CarNewsCafe.com. For small families, this car hits a sweet spot.
The 2018 Buick Regal TourX is a five-seat station wagon fitting in the midsize category, which is mostly populated by either high-priced European wagons or lower-cost sedans. The Regal TourX features a spunky little turbocharged engine, good fuel economy, and it’s a big fan of SiriusXM’s Turbo channel (XM41). Because of its size, however, three kids across the back seat was not popular in our house, marking the only serious drawback to the 2018 Regal TourX that we could find. With two children or a teenager that can sit up front, though, that issue goes away.
How Useful Is the 2018 Buick Regal TourX As a Family Hauler?
As mentioned, the 2018 TourX has limitations if the family is too large for the car itself. It’s a midsize vehicle, not a large one, so the second row isn’t as accommodating to three across as would a larger vehicle’s be. That said, the Regal TourX does have a solid appeal as a family hauler for its good cargo space, strong drive dynamic, and right-sized appeal. Smaller families will find this a refreshing alternative to the bulky crossovers that seem to populate the non-sedan crowd in this segment.
Plus just look at the thing. The 2018 Buick Regal TourX is stunningly beautiful.
Expected Reliability/Dependability and Value
It’s difficult to find reliability metrics for a brand-new model, but the Buick brand on the whole has enjoyed an above average reputation for dependability.
In terms of value, however, there is a mixed result. The 2018 Regal TourX may not wow luxury buyers with its not-as-luxurious interior, but comapred to most non-premium and semi-premium makes, the Regal TourX is wonderful inside. We think most will be happy at the middle-ground Preferred package with a couple of upgrade options to suit. The base model Regal TourX, while well-equipped, is not as upscale so spending the extra dollars to go up a notch is worth it.
Which Version of the 2018 Regal TourX Would We Buy?
The 2018 Buick Regal TourX in the Preferred trim is our best buy option here. It’s also worth adding a few extras, including the driver’s aids and safety options in upgrade packages. Infotainment is very good as-is and really needs no upgrade from what’s given with the trim level and comfort is also superb as-is with no need to change things around.
Radio Setting and Kid Approvals
The style of the Regal TourX and its appeal on the road demand a faster-paced musical choice that also gets a little retro without being totally classic. For that, SiriusXM’s Turbo channel 41 seemed to match. It reminds those of us in our 40s of the station wagons we (now) fondly recall without going all big hair 80s.
For the kids, two in the back seat were well-accommodated, but three across was a little cramped. The kids otherwise liked the car and thought it was “pretty” and that it felt “fast.” All good things.
A Note on Our Process: Reviews here are based on Aaron’s reviews found around the Web. The goal here is to forego the usual “horsepower and capability” jargon of most automotive reviews and instead focus on how well the vehicle is as a regular family hauler for a single dad.
